Religious view on student giving present to teacher
It is not permitted for a teacher to accept present or gift from a student during the period of study for it can be considered as a bribery for the benefit whereby the teacher may give a pass to a non-performing student, or the teacher may ask a favour of another fellow's teacher to do the same. However the act of student giving present to the teacher is permissible when the relation between them expires because the student has finished the studies or already found a job.

My comments:
This is probably a strict view, but nonetheless should be a standard practice. However if a performing student wanted to give a present to a teacher out of respect or appreciation even during the period of their student-teacher relationship and the amount or value of such a present is small or consumable in nature like food and alike, I do not see any harm for the teacher to accept it. In case of a weak or new student, additional precaution shall be put in place to avert allegation of wrong-doings. But if this can be avoided, it is probably preferable.
